Kanelbullens dag 2017 is right here!

Every year on the 4th of October people in Nordic countries celebrate National Cinnamon Bun Day. It’s Kanelbullens dag in Sweden, Kanelsnurrensdag in Norway, Korvapuusti päivä in Finland and so on. You can find a cinnamon roll in every bakery, every supermarket, every newspaper spot in Stockholm, and 95% of it would be really fresh and delicious. Almost every time I visit Sweden I eat no less than one bun every day. Although today I’m not there, I tried to recreate the atmosphere of a cozy Swedish bakery by baking lots of Kanelbullens, and I suppose that I succeeded.

Midnight Run Helsinki 2017

I dragged my husband to our first Midnight Run (actually, Midnattsloppet) in August 2015 only because that year I used any suitable excuse to get to Stockholm, and Aeroflot was still offering convenient flights for adequate price. The website of the race promised a fun run on a warm summer night in Södermalm – what an excellent occasion! And this was the night when I found out that my body is well adapted to run at night, – because of no sun at all, I suppose. The next year, a wonderful night run in Stockholm coincided with the marathon in Helsinki, so we chose another race in series – same Helsinki, but a month later. It turned out that September night in Helsinki had nothing to do with the August night in Stockholm – the race started in the pouring rain, we ran down the slippery pavement, jumped in puddles…

Where to find specialty coffee in Helsinki pt.I

Helsinki is not my favourite destination but it’s the quickest and the most convenient way for citizens of StP to take part in a well organised running race; it’s the quickest and the most entertaining way to get your stamps for Finnish visa; you can find pleasures everywhere. First time in Helsinki both me and my husband had no idea what to do there, next time we’ve found Johan och Nyström, and a few trips later lots of specialty coffee spots appeared on our map. Do not make our mistakes, stay away from numerous Robert’s Coffees (Robert was Paulig’s name, this means there’s nothing interesting unless you are a fan of McDonald’s coffee), buy a Starbucks mug for your collection and go find a damn fine cup of coffee using this guide. 500 m from railway station Artisan Café /Vuorikatu 8, 00100 Helsinki, Finland/ on map Although Artisan Café is just 500m…

Carrot cake with chocolate soil and marzipan carrots

I’ve never been a carrot cake fan. Seriously, I’ve been wondering why do people eat this boring cake that needs a ton of cream to slide down the throat. So, it’s not surprising that the last one I tried was years ago at Starbucks (and that one was not that bad because it has an impressive amount of lubricant). Years later, on a dark cold winter morning I was drinking my coffee and looking for some challenging cake recipe with a delicious and comforting result. I’ve found this nice and simple Donna Hay’s recipe, made it and was pretty much satisfied with the result. The cake was chewable enough, but it was…. well, basic. I kept trying to make something more interesting, something more festive, added a kilometre of ingredients so my creation could still be the carrot cake but with a holiday spirit. It was a big hit every…

CHARD

Have you ever tried to grow your own chard? I’ve met a pack of seeds in a store and decided to give it a try in spite of all the warnings about it’s capricious nature. It turned out that my balcony was a perfect place for this plant, and it was so so beautiful right from the beginning and to the end, from the first tiny leaf to these delicious toasts. Yep, I spent a lot of time taking pics of different stages of it’s growth and even sowd the second batch.
