Midnight Sun Marathon 2017, Tromsø, Norway 🇳🇴

Thought a lot about Midnight Sun Marathon while writing previous post about Winter Run series. I’ve posted some pics from our trip to Tromsø on my travel insta, but didn’t made it to the most stunning photos of midnight sun. Actually, no words are needed after the photo above, but I’ll tell you a bit more about the race. We spent a few days previous to the race in the city and all those days were rainy and grey – just like they should be according to all those jokes about Norway’s climate. Grey were the nights as well. No sunrise, no sunset, no midnight sun – never-ending grey day. We loved the city anyway – we were well equipped with Uniqlo down jackets and bright raincoats, nothing stopped us from enjoying nordic charm, climbing Trondheim mountains, drinking all the great coffee and eating all the raisin buns. When the night of…

Winter Run 2018, Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪

The most beautiful race of the last year was Norwegian Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromso. Charmed by this tiny city, I was searching for some winter race to come back during those months when northern lights are visible. Northern lights still remain in plans for some other winter due to the differences in ours and plane’s schedules, but I’ve found this Winter Run series in a few cities of Norway and Sweden. In Stockholm, the race takes place in Skansen, the open-air museum. We walked there more than once, so I had a good idea of what awaits us – steep climbs, steep slopes – lots of fun, y’know. The race is not positioned as a serious competition, rather as a running party. Despite this, all of runners’ needs are taken into account – warm dressing rooms, water, Vitamin Well sports drinks, bag drop, toilets and even studded shoes for rent…

Good Life Coffee, Helsinki, Finland

2 km from railway station Good Life Coffee Kolmas linja 17, 00530 Helsinki, Finland /show on map/ I didn’t include Good Life Coffee in my first guide to Helsinki specialty coffee scene but not because it’s worse than others, and not because I love it less than others – on the contrary, most often it’s the first place where my husband and I run from the railway station looking for breakfast. In Good Life Coffee everything is awesome: from coffee to breakfast (avo toasts, granola, oats, pastry), from the general concept AVOID BAD COFFEE AVOID BAD LIFE to seasonal pastry like Runebergstorta. They roast Kenyan beans perfectly, brew it good and pour it into large cozy mugs. So why didn’t I mention it in my first review? ‘Cause I didn’t have photos. ‘Cause I’m always busy. ‘Cause for the very first time in Good Life Coffee, when Ivan didn’t yet know…

World Marathon Majors 1/6 – TCS New York Marathon 11.5.2018

Since I started running, I tried to choose races which gave me goose bumps. The reasons may vary – the city, the course, the history. Dozen of races in Stockholm because it’s the best city in the whole world for me; my first marathon in Lisbon because it’s course goes all the way along the ocean; marathon in Athens because that’s the place there the marathon was born, and so on. But New York Marathon chose me. My husband said that it was a wonderful occasion to show me the city, that’s why we entered a drawing for two years in a row. For some reason last year I was completely sure that I would win, but it didn’t happen, so we ran California International Marathon in Sacramento instead. I did not expect any miracles this year, and the message that I got the slot was like a bolt from…

Midnight Run Helsinki 2017

I dragged my husband to our first Midnight Run (actually, Midnattsloppet) in August 2015 only because that year I used any suitable excuse to get to Stockholm, and Aeroflot was still offering convenient flights for adequate price. The website of the race promised a fun run on a warm summer night in Södermalm – what an excellent occasion! And this was the night when I found out that my body is well adapted to run at night, – because of no sun at all, I suppose. The next year, a wonderful night run in Stockholm coincided with the marathon in Helsinki, so we chose another race in series – same Helsinki, but a month later. It turned out that September night in Helsinki had nothing to do with the August night in Stockholm – the race started in the pouring rain, we ran down the slippery pavement, jumped in puddles…
